26th June 2012
The June ACC magazine has a report about the Assembly and the proposals about marriage. Please note: There are only three proposals from presbyteries about marriage in the proposals listing for the 13th Assembly. The Presbyteries are: Port Phillip West (Victoria), South Moreton (Queensland) and Tasmania. The resolution from the Presbytery of North Queensland included in the June ACCatalyst was not a proposal to the Assembly. It was meant to affirm the present UCA understanding of marriage and to form the basis for a press release. Apologies have been presented to the Presbytery of North Queensland, and to the UCA National Assembly for this error. Also note that there are some differences in the wording of the final proposal and rationale for the South Moreton Presbytery proposal compared to ACCatalyst.
The version of the Presbytery of South Moreton proposal and the rationale published in the June ACCatalyst were those used at the Presbytery meeting and the proposal was the one accepted at the meeting. The rationale used at the meeting was of course never part of a formal decision and was included in good faith and provided context and information for the proposal as presented at that meeting and included the names of the proposer and seconder which highlighted it was their submission to the presbytery. The Presbytery of South Moreton has indicated that "The rationale was totally re-written before submission to the Assembly." The final version of the proposal submitted and the revised rationale can be found on the 13th Assembly website (Proposal 43) along with all the proposals to the Assembly.
The June magazine also includes Peter Corney reflecting on the State of the Protestant Church, and Max Champion’s (National Council) response to the UCA Assembly Uniting Justice submission on same-sex marriage, and Max’s sermon on The Good Shepherd.
